Interim Finance Accountant
Location: London
Rate: £43.06 per hour (umbrella)
Working Arrangement: Hybrid


A Central London Local Authority is seeking an interim Finance Accountant to join their team. This role offers the opportunity to cover a spectrum of financial accounting, reconciliation, and reporting responsibilities across various areas of Financial Reporting and Controls, as designated by the Head of Financial Reporting and Control.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage tasks related to Balance Sheet Management, Technical Revenue, Capital, Cash and Bank, as well as VAT and CIS taxation.
  • Lead the timely closure of the Council’s annual accounts, adhering to internal and statutory deadlines, and ensuring a successful audit within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare balance sheets and associated notes for the Council's statement of accounts, including debtors, provisions, and officer remuneration.
  • Oversee and assist in monitoring balance sheet reconciliations, utilising technical expertise to evaluate accounting treatments.
  • Maintain high-quality working papers and promptly respond to external audit queries.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • CCAB qualification is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, policies, and practices.
  • Familiarity with the council’s budget processes and requirements.
  • Understanding of the council’s financial framework, including financial regulations, budget guidelines, and closing of accounts procedures.
  • Awareness of key factors, influences, and legislation impacting local government.
  • Proficiency in tender evaluation and contract negotiation.
  • Thorough understanding of UK and international accounting standards and their practical application.
  • Experience in providing financial administration services, with a focus on monitoring, reviewing, and enhancing service delivery.
  • Proven track record in preparing accounting statements and offering advice and support to council service departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff towards achieving desired outcomes.
  • Knowledge of option appraisals modelling and successful delivery of enhanced financial services within complex organisational structures.
